UUID Generator: a practical guide

Generate version 4 UUIDs using your browser’s cryptographic random source.

When this is useful

UUID version 4 uses random data to produce identifiers that can be created without a central counter. They are useful for draft records, fixtures, distributed systems, and public identifiers. They do not encode creation time or establish an ordering.

A reliable workflow

Choose a count and generate a batch. The browser uses crypto.randomUUID rather than Math.random. Copy one identifier per record and preserve the standard hyphenated representation unless the receiving system requires another format.

Example input: 3 identifiers

What to check before you finish

Randomness makes collisions unlikely, not impossible. A database uniqueness constraint remains appropriate. Knowing a record’s UUID should never be enough to authorize access: validate the user’s permissions independently of the identifier.

Keep the next step simple

Open the UUID Generator above to try the workflow. Your input is processed in your browser, without an account or file uploads. The related tools below can help with the next step; check the output before publishing it or adding it to a production system.
